Books - Some of our favorites! -

Each of these has become a favorite because of it's own unique view of the world. SEEING THROUGH MAPS is our most recent. Is it about cartography? design? interpersonal perception? world views? political science? social studies? YES! to all - and an integrated approach it is, plus fun and easy to read. Other books are on maps, diversity and "personal power."

Seeing Through Maps
SEEING THROUGH MAPS: Many Ways to See the World - $24.95 This book is about so much more than cartography. Map projections are used as tools for understanding the world from different points of view -- those of the world's countries, the world's cultures, the world's people, and the world's history. Seeing Through Maps also explains the principles and hidden messages contained in a number of unique maps and provocative images. It includes the Peters Projection Map; the Van Sant GeoSphere Map; the Fuller Dymaxion Map; a Toronto Canada-based equidistant map; Minard's Map, which tracks Napoleon's march on Moscow; Petit's African Diaspora Map; and a cartogram of global warming. It also includes the original McArthur Universal Corrective Map of the World, an upside down map that has Australia on top. The new REVISED and EXPANDED edition includes: Cartogram of 2004 USA Election Results, Hobo-Dyer Projection maps, and a new chapter called, “Are Maps TALK instead of Pictures” which challenges the conventional notion that maps are representations of reality. Instead, the authors assert that maps are propositions or arguments, and used as tools of persuasion or exploitation. When people in power control the mapmaking, then maps represent the interests of people in power. This book strips the veneer of authority off the status quo, and calls for a true democracy where people use the power of maps to speak (and argue) for their own interests. Five Billion Years of Global Change
Five Billion Years of Global Change: A History of the Land - $19.95 by Denis Wood. 336 pages, 6" x 9" format. Retail = $19.95; ISBN# 1-57230-958-X
Demonstrating how the story of our past can help us better understand the present, geographer Denis Wood tells the story of our entire past, from the Big Bang to the World Wide Web. Five Billion Years of Global Change takes readers through the formation of the Earth's atmosphere, oceans, continents, and mountains; the origin of life; the evolution of the human species; the spread of agricultural production; and the growth of international trade. In a uniquely evocative and philosophical style, Wood shows how a greater knowledge of the interconnectedness of our world could potentially change the way we approach contemporary problems. This eye-opening book will be enjoyed by all readers interested in the history of our planet and concerned about its future. Prof. Wilbur Zelinsky of Penn State says this book is “a dazzling intellectual journey that has the potential to alter profoundly the ways in which we think about our planet, human history, and our own lives.” *** NOTE: We are great fans of Denis Wood, having published his SEEING THROUGH MAPS book. Peters Atlas of the World
A revolutionary view of the earth -- showing it in true proportion. Now available in Atlas form. The Peters Atlas is the first volume to present a realistic picture of the world in terms of scale and proportion. Based on the principle of equality of area, the Peters Atlas of the World allows the user to see the world in true proportion. For example, Africa is fourteen times bigger than Greenland yet the Mercator Projection -- 400 years old and still universally used -- makes them look the same size! The Peters Atlas corrects these distortions.

The Power of Maps by Denis Wood (248 pages)
The Power of Maps by Denis Wood. 248 pages, 6" x 9" format. Retail = $19.95; The Library Journal says, "This book accompanies an exhibit called 'The Power of Maps,' which was held at New York City's Cooper Hewitt Museum from 1992 to 1993. For those not fortunate enough to have seen the exhibit, the book stands by itself. It aims to show that every cartographer has an agenda of some kind and to assist the map user in figuring out that agenda. The writing is entertaining but a bit wordy and irritatingly full of ellipses." In 1995 the Whole Earth Review wrote: "Denis Wood unmasks the map for what it is: a communication tool imbedded in culture, history, selected perspectives and--yes, sometimes--bias. Even the most simple map is a highly selected, generalized, and symbolized picture of something the mapmaker wishes to communicate...The Power of Maps explodes myths, offers insight, and arms the map user with the mapmaker's perspective." This book has great images, and was written for a sophisticated reader. There are 46 pages of footnotes (which is about 20% of the book length!). If you need more map theory...this book is for you. Otherwise, see SEEING THROUGH MAPS above for an easier and more entertaining read.

Synchronoptic World History - German version - 2 volumes - hardcover
SYNCHRONOPTISCHE WELTGESCHICHTE - in German. 3,000BCE to 1979CE. Arno Peters' "Sychronoptic World History". Noticing that in most histories of the world Europe got more attention than Africa, Asia and Latin America combined, Peters decided to create a history which gave equal weight to each century in human history and to each region. The information in the "Synchronoptic World History" is therefore arranged in tabular form with time running along the top and regions running down the side, so that the reader can see at a glance what was happening around the globe at any one time. -------------------------------------------------------------------- "We are told when the Spanish Armada was sunk, King Philip wept. "Were there no other tears?" asks Studs Terkel. Behind that question stands another: Why do we view history through the eyes of kings, generals, politicians, not the majority of humankind? Analyzing the way world history was taught, Arno Peters concluded: * it focused on battles and big-shots, often overlooking what common people were doing, * it concentrated on Western history, paying scant attention to the rest of the world, * it paid little attention to certain periods, as if they were unimportant. "World history," then, fell far short of its claims. Peters set out to correct the problem. The result: this breath-taking work of scholarship that covers 5,000 years of human history. Every century, every year, is assigned space with mathematical accuracy, not by some historian's hobby. It presents data from an amazing breadth of cultures without the usual bias. It pays close attention to scientific discoveries, economic life, technology, social arrangements, literature, art, philosophy, law, religion, as well as wars and revolutions. It does all this without moralizing. By offering data without an overlay of interpretation it allows history to make its own point. Many have offered high praise for the work. Author Thomas Mann said, "It provides a gripping, memorable picture of world history, designed to implant the ideals of peace, freedom and humanity in young people."
