We have customized "turn-key" programs for firms in high-tech sectors, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, as well as service industries and the public sector. Call us to see if we have sample workbooks specific to your industry (800-736-1293). The materials below include our "off-the-shelf" resources that that have reached over 100,000 employees and managers. The lists begins with valuable article reprints and our well-known tip-sheets, continues with some training modules, and concludes with books we either wrote ourselves or highly recommend. Other materials on Empowerment can also be found in the WEB STORE under the other two sections: "Special Deals! Close-outs. Seconds" and "Free Article Reprints, Audiotapes, and Books." “Managing Your Boss” by John J. Gabarro & John P. Kotter, article reprint
Harvard Business Review, 1965, 43, 119-131. An HBR Classic. Effective managers need to take time and energy to manage their relationships with their bosses. This effort can simplify their jobs by eliminating potential problems. The boss-manager relationship is one of mutual dependence between two fallible human beings. Managers must have a good understanding of themselves and their bosses and use this information to develop a healthy relationship compatible with both persons' work styles and expectations. Problem Bosses: Who they are - and - how to deal with them (370 pages, paperback)
From Publishers Weekly: Partners in a counseling service, psychologists Wylie and Grothe here offer advice to employees, a reversal of their previous guide, Problem Employees. A compilation of complaints about superiors who are rude, unfair, dishonest, incompetent, etc., is followed by details on 12 programs for improving the situation in one's workplace. Noting that their suggested strategies aren't guaranteed of success, the authors first instruct readers to "have fun, even if the topic is serious." ------------------ From Library Journal: In this "how-to" book, Grothe and Wylie show that problem bosses are not rare, and then go on to offer 12 ways to handle such individuals. These range from doing nothing or changing your own behavior and attitudes to talking to your boss one on one or "firing" your boss (resigning, that is). The authors explain advantages and disadvantages of each alternative so that the employee can decide which might be appropriate in a given situation and understand what the risks associated with that alternative might be. Although much has been written on problem employees, problem bosses have not received the same attention.
