“Managing Your Boss” by John J. Gabarro & John P. Kotter, article reprint
Harvard Business Review, 1965, 43, 119-131. An HBR Classic. Effective managers need to take time and energy to manage their relationships with their bosses. This effort can simplify their jobs by eliminating potential problems. The boss-manager relationship is one of mutual dependence between two fallible human beings. Managers must have a good understanding of themselves and their bosses and use this information to develop a healthy relationship compatible with both persons' work styles and expectations. They must seek out information about their boss's goals and pressures by being alert for opportunities to question the boss, and by paying attention to clues in his or her behavior. McKinsey Award Winner. One of the all-time best-selling Harvard Business Review reprints. Highly recommended for leaders, managers, and MBA-students. Available from the Harvard Business Review for $7. Order one free sample copy here. PLace volume orders from Upward Influence & Empowerment section (#7) of our ODT Shop.

"Cognitive Style and Interpersonal Behavior: implications for Human Relations Training"
Reprint from GROUP & ORGANIZATION STUDIES (Vol. 7, No. 1), 21 pages, saddle-stitched, blue soft-cover. Why is it that some people benefit from human relations (HR) training, and others get little from it? This article is a review and analysis of the academic literature on cognitive styles (how people think and process information) from 1950 through 1980. The specific focus is on a trait known as "field-independence." Differences in this trait can account for why HR training is more beneficial for some than for others. The article concludes: (1) a highly structured HR training setting is most appropriate (the corollary is that unstructured training, like "T-groups," are beneficial to a limited number of thinking styles); (2) randomly composed groups learn more than do groups of people who cluster into sub-groups of people with backgrounds similar to themselves; (3) trainers can benefit from understanding how cognitive styles impact group dynamics; (4) trainers can make group interventions guided by what works with participants of differing cognitive styles. No quantity limit. Call 800-736-1293 if ordering more than 100 copies.
