Peters Map Teacher's & Trainer's Packages provide innovative resources for inspiring new perspectives and "unfreezing" learners of all ages. Everything you need to teach about the Peters Map in the classroom.
The Peters Projection Map can be an extremely effective tool to unfreeze students and get them to realize that there are many different ways to view "the world." When presented as part of a discussion of frame on reference, it provides a dramatic example of how our perceptions are shaped by many things we are not even aware of.

You can use examples of how the distortions of the traditional map affects our perception of specific issues. For example, the effect on our environment of the destruction of the rain forests can appear much more significant when you see the true size of South America vs. its appearance on the traditional map. Depending on the audience, you might also ask them if they can identify positions on specific issues that may have been affected by the distorted representations of the traditional map

PARTIAL TEXT OF Explanatory panel: Five thousand years of human history have brought us to the threshold of a new age. It is an age typified by science and technology, by the end of colonial domination, by a growing awareness of the interdependence of all nations and all peoples. Such a moment in history demands that we look critically at our understanding of the world. This understanding is based, to a significant degree, on the work of map-makers of an age when Europe dominated and exploited the world. Surprisingly, maps still reflect that bygone era...In this complex and interdependent world in which the nations now live, the peoples of the world deserve the most accurate possible portrayal of their world. The Peters Map is that map for our day.
